Perfect Recipe
Start with a thick base of Life Insurance. Measure it according to the cupfuls of debt / financ-ial obligations that you have. Keep in mind that these are not just the house, car, caravan, boat, but also young dependent children (costs around $200,000 per child to bring up).
Add some Trauma Insurance (in case a sudden serious illness hits) and also some Total Permanent Disability (in case you are disabled to a degree whereby you would never be able to work).
Throw in a measure of income protection and / or some Mortgage Protection depending on your circumstances. This is not to be confused with Total Permanent disability as it does a more thorough job because it covers temporary and partial disabilities as well. Set the parameters like ‘wait period’ and ‘claim period’ balancing need and affordability.
Adding some 'Redundancy Protection' at this point will add to the strength in flavour of the plan.
Medical Insurance can be chopped up into pieces of Hospital only, Hospital plus Specialists and Tests, with GP and prescriptions, with Dental and Optometrists. Select according to affordability, keeping in mind that the Hospital plus Specialists and tests does the job quite well. Not much need for the added colouring of GPs, prescriptions, dental or optometrists, keeping in mind that these parts of the cover have low limits but higher premiums.
Garnish with a tiny measure of Waiver of Premium. This will take away the burden of you having to pay your premiums if unable to work for an extended period of time. A particular provider has an added strength product , which includes waiving of the premium if made redundant as well.
